Oviedo Filarmonía
On 6 February 1999, Teatro Campoamor witnessed the birth of the Ciudad de Oviedo Symphony Orchestra, now Oviedo Filarmonía. With a strong lyrical identity, remarkable versatility and a deep connection with the city whose name it bears, twenty-five years later, on the evening of 5 June 2024 and on the same stage, the orchestra received the city’s Silver Medal before a packed auditorium, as the “heart of culture” in the capital of the Principality.
Teatro Campoamor is the home of opera, zarzuela and dance, and the main stage for Oviedo Filarmonía, whether in the orchestra pit or on stage. Essential events such as the New Year Concerts, galas and lyric seasons make this Oviedo theatre the nerve centre of culture in the city, the birthplace of the prestigious Lyric Awards and a venue that has welcomed names written in letters of gold in the history of music and the other arts.
The resident ensemble of the Oviedo Festival of Spanish Lyric Theatre, the Teatro Campoamor Dance Festival and the Auditorium Concerts and Luis G. Iberni Piano Days series, Oviedo Filarmonía was founded at the initiative of Oviedo City Council to meet the needs of the new musical activities taking root in the city, which are now among its defining cultural hallmarks. The orchestra also appears in three of the five titles in the Oviedo Opera season and offers an extensive programme ranging from its now traditional school concerts to the summer open-air cycle at the University and performances in landmark venues such as the Carlos Tartiere football stadium and Cathedral Square. In recent years, its close relationship with audiences has grown even stronger, as has its social role, through streamed concerts, new educational projects and charity concerts.
From 2004 to 2011, its principal conductor was Friedrich Haider, under whom the orchestra moved onto the international stage with a tour of Japan and concerts in Paris. Under Marzio Conti, principal conductor between 2011 and 2017, the orchestra strengthened its connection with the city and reached out to new audiences. Its current principal conductor is Lucas Macías.
